- A note to anyone involved in the creation of Macintosh software,
- past, present or future:
-
- I hope that you've been able to see Executor/DOS 1.2 for yourself.
- If you are a programmer, perhaps you can imagine the difficulty of
- getting as far as we have with as few programmers as we have, but
- we've done it. Now, with your help, we can quintuple the market
- for Macintosh software. The following is a list of actions you may
- want to undertake to help us help you.
-
-
-
- DONATE SOFTWARE FOR TESTING
-
- If you have a PC, I hope you will try your software out under
- Executor/DOS 1.2 and let us know how it performs. Additionally,
- if you could send us a copy of all of your Macintosh software,
- we'll add it to our test library so that future versions of Executor
- will run your software. Please send software to:

- BUNDLE EXECUTOR WITH YOUR SOFTWARE
-
- If you do not yet have a Windows or DOS version of your software,
- you may want to bundle Executor/DOS with the Mac version and
- sell the bundle to PC users. We're very flexible. Please
- contact Clifford Matthews if you're interested in bundling
- Executor/DOS with your software.
-
- Even if you have a Windows version, you may want to gain a foothold
- in the UNIX market by bundling Executor/X-Windows with your product.
-
-
-
- ENCOURAGE HARDWARE MANUFACTURERS TO BUNDLE EXECUTOR
-
- We have very high goals for the level of compatibility provided by
- Executor/DOS 2.0. Once Executor/DOS 2.0 is shipping, ARDI will try
- to get Macintosh compatibility to be a "checklist item" that users
- look for when they buy a PC or PC-clone.
-
- However, if you have contacts with PC manufacturers, it's not
- too early to encourage them to bundle Executor/DOS. The license
- fees that we would charge any of the major PC manufacturers
- are exceedingly small, but even then the revenue generated
- would be enough to insure that we'd have sufficient engineers
- to keep pace with the latest developments.
-
-
-
- PROVIDE A TECHNICAL LIASON
-
- If your applications don't currently run under Executor, it is
- likely that if our engineers talk to your engineers, resolution
- will be quick. Our engineers are sufficiently swamped that
- you don't have to worry about them calling and chatting aimlessly
- with your engineers. By the time we call, we've probably
- narrowed the problem down to a very small set of choices, and
- we might be alerting you to bugs that will only cause you
- unexpected grief down the road.
-
-
-
- KEEP YOUR SOFTWARE CLEAN
-
- Please obey all the programatic interface guidelines specified
- by Apple. Be extremely sure to use the Gestalt function to
- determine whether particular subsystems are present. We will
- be supporting *some* parts of System 7 in Executor/DOS 2.0,
- but not all, so code that ignores Gestalt can cause us both
- problems.
-
-
-
- CONTINUE TO RELEASE "68000" BASED VERSIONS OF YOUR SOFTWARE
-
- Executor/DOS 1.0 uses a "dynamically recompiling" synthetic
- CPU. That, plus the fact that our OS/graphics code is running
- native, allows us to get very impressive results in comparison
- to other emulators. However, currently we recompile to an
- interpretive code. We are working on a new synthetic CPU that
- recompiles directly to native code, and it will be FAST.
- However, unless forced, we won't be doing an emulation of the
- PowerPC architecture (note I'm saying "of the", not "for the").
- So even if your software requires great tremendous CPU power,
- do not abandon the 68000, because our new synthetic 68000 will
- be exceedingly fast on the i486DX4s, Pentiums, Alphas, MIPS
- and HP chips.
